Allotments are an accepted concept to enable people with limited access to space and equipment at their own homes to grow vegetables and flowers, for their own enjoyment (and the enjoyment of others). These areas are provided at, what appears to be a subsidised rate ( http://www.eastleigh.gov.uk/ebc-2284 – it’s been a while since I’ve seen areas measured in rods :O) ) As far as I am aware, you aren’t suppose to sell the crops you grow – to prevent business usage of the areas. In this increasingly technological age, I would like to propose a similar concept, where areas are provided by local councils at a subsidised rate, where residents can setup areas as a workshop – maybe these factory / commercial areas could have areas set aside for exactly this. Near-by businesses might spring up, providing tool-hire and supply raw materials. Again, the aim wouldn’t be to provide areas for business, it would be strictly for residents to indulge and improve their workshop skills. I see an area where budding carpenters / electrical engineers / metal workers / *smiths gather together – sharing ideas / teaching and passing on traditional skills. The vocational schools (CSE qualifications) of old come close to my idea – but this isn’t just aimed at children – this is for any age. This post was brought to you by the creativist in me :O)
